Chapter Twenty-Three

OUR CHAT about the future had left me a little unnerved, but it was pretty easy to put all of that out of my mind, because after that, Quinn and I grew even closer. Not only were we still spending every night and day together, but we were doing couple stuff with other people. We had dinner with Leah and Christopher a few times. We even double-dated with Campbell and Mia, out to clubs, for drinks or dancing.

They loved Quinn. Mia quickly got over her disappointment that I hadn’t gotten together with Erik.

“You look so happy when you’re together,” she said, yelling over the sound of Bryan’s band.

“I am happy.” I grinned.

“Good. You deserve it.”

“What about you and Campbell?”

She bit her lip but couldn’t keep from smiling. “I don’t want to jinx anything.”

My eyebrows popped up and I leaned closer. “Jinx what? Is he behaving?”

“Everything’s just… perfect. I’m not used to perfect in relationships. It’s great, but it’s scary.”

I sighed. “I know the feeling. Well.”

Campbell and Quinn were talking nearby and came over to us. It was clear they were wondering what we’d been discussing, but neither of them asked.

Quinn leaned on my back, and the weight of him against me felt good. I loved that he was comfortable enough for us to touch in public.

“You ready to leave soon?” he asked.

“Whenever you want.”

“Okay. I’ve just got to be up on the early side tomorrow.”

“How come? It’s Saturday.”

He took the beer out of my hand and took a few deep swallows. I watched as the muscles in his neck moved. There wasn’t a single inch of his body that I didn’t find sexy. I could watch him all damned day and night and never get bored. “I promised your sister I’d be over in the morning for another lesson.”

I laughed.

Mia perked up. “What so funny?”

“I’m just amused by the fact that my boyfriend is giving my sister knitting lessons.”

“You knit?” Mia turned to Quinn. “I’ve always wanted to learn how.”

“It’s easy,” Quinn said, ignoring me and the grin on my face. “One of the nuns taught me, years ago. It’s really relaxing once you get the hang of it. Assuming you’re not all thumbs.”

He knocked his shoulder into mine.

“Hey, I only tried once. And there was something wrong with that yarn you gave me.”

Quinn’s deep laughter rumbled so close to my ear I could feel it, sending shivery thrills down the entire length of my body.

Now I was really ready to go home. “Maybe if you’re nice, he’ll try to teach you too. You should see the awesome blanket Leah’s already made.”

Mia nodded. “If you have time, I’d love to learn.”

Quinn smiled at her. “I’ll see what I can do. I’m happy to squeeze in some extra time. I’m working on Christmas gifts right now, and we’re already coming up on Thanksgiving. I gotta get busy.”

“On that note, I think we’re taking off.” I stood and hugged Mia good night, then put my hand on Campbell’s shoulder. “You guys staying at our place tonight?”

Campbell shook his head.
